Leap into the deep

Leap into the Deep

Visual artist Tijs Rooijakkers has designed a unique work of art for the terrain of the Technical University of Eindhoven (NL). It is named 'Leap into the Deep' and measures 7.2 meters x 7.2 meters. It is completely executed of 3D curved steel tubes.

A 3D scale model was the starting point. It symbolises a funnel/swirl. Rooijakkers contacted Kersten Europe for the execution of his design. Kersten Europe has over 55 years of experience in bending technology and offers additional services such as project management, engineer, (3D) cutting to size and qualified welding. For this project we collaborated with partners Meulendijks Straal- en Conserveringsbedrijf (surface treatments) en Reijrink Staalconstructie (construction work). Strength calculations by Ir. Rijk Blok of the TU Eindhoven.

The structure is made of steel tubes Ø193,7mm in S355 with different wall thicknesses. The tubes have been completely 3D bent in several radii and welded together.

The surface is grinded, sprayed and provided with epoxy primer and powder coating including anti-graffity gloss. The swirl has been welded together on four junctions on-site. The welding seams have been grinded and touched up so that the different sections merge seamlessly.

Official opening was on Thursday March 30th, 2017.
