Expo2020 - Al Wasl Plaza

The 35th World Expo will be held in Dubai (UAE) from October 20th, 2020 to April 10th, 2021. The theme will be ‘Connecting minds, Creating the future’. There are over 200 participants and a number of 20 million visitors is expected of which 70% to come from outside the UAE.

All Expo2020 activities are organized around the Al Wasl Plaza (which means ‘Connection’ in Arabic language). This architectural masterpiece has been designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture. The building connects to the three thematic districts and the UAE pavilion. Major events such as the opening and closing ceremonies, new year’s Eve and UAE National Day will be held at Al Wasl Plaza.

After the Expo2020 the building will serve as a future hub for major UAE events. The Al Wasl Plaza will include many restaurants, fountains, and parks inside and will be covered by a translucent 67-meter-tall domed trellis of 130 meters in diameter. The trellis also serve as a 360-degree projection surface visible to visitors inside and outside.

The trellis design resembles the Expo2020 logo with a pattern of interconnected rings in different shapes and sizes. Kersten secured the order for cold and induction bending the curved tubes used for the trellis. It consists of approximately 1,100 pcs of S460NH grade tubes Ø508mm with thicknesses varying from 10, 16, 20, 30 and 50mm.

The urban impact on the city of Dubai is very big. Over 440 hectares of dessert have been transformed into an innovative architectural landscape. They also have to take care of all the amenities and facilities to welcome up to 250,000 visitors per day!

All steel bending locations of Kersten are manufacturing curved parts for the Expo2020.
